Luke 10:38–42
In a world that constantly pushes us to do more, Jesus gently invites us to slow down.
In this first episode of Sit With Jesus, we reflect on the story of Mary and Martha—and the one thing Jesus said truly matters.
👉 “Take a moment to listen before reading…”
In the home of Mary and Martha, something happened that speaks directly to our modern lives.
Martha was busy. She was doing what many of us would consider good and responsible work. She was serving, preparing, and trying to make sure everything was just right for her guest — Jesus Himself.
But in the middle of all her activity, Martha became frustrated.
The Bible says she was “distracted with much serving.” (Luke 10:40)
Her work had become overwhelming. Her service had become stressful.
And soon her frustration spilled over.
She said to Jesus:
“Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone?” (Luke 10:40)
Martha was not wrong for serving.
But she had allowed her responsibilities to distract her from the very reason Jesus was there.
Meanwhile, Mary had chosen something different.
The Bible tells us:
“Mary… sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word.” (Luke 10:39)
Mary stopped.
She listened.
She gave her full attention to Jesus.
And in that moment, Jesus spoke words that echo through every generation.
“Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things.
But one thing is needed.” (Luke 10:41–42)
One thing.
Jesus did not say that work was unimportant.
He did not say that responsibilities should be ignored.
But he did say that there is something more important than all the tasks that fill our days.
The presence of Christ.
Mary understood that the opportunity to sit with Jesus was more valuable than finishing every task.
Jesus even said:
“Mary has chosen the good part, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:42)
Work will always be waiting.
Responsibilities will never completely disappear.
But time spent with Christ is eternal.
Many of us live lives that look a lot like Martha’s.
Our days are filled with schedules, obligations, and responsibilities. Even good things can crowd out quiet moments with God.
We may be busy for God…
but rarely sitting with God.
The story of Mary and Martha invites us to pause and ask ourselves a simple question:
What are the “many things” that are distracting me today?
Perhaps it is:
• work responsibilities
• constant noise and media
• worries about the future
• pressure to accomplish more
Jesus gently reminds us that peace begins when we return to the one thing that truly matters.
His presence.
The invitation of Christ is not complicated.
It is simply this:
Slow down.
Sit with Him.
Listen.
And allow His peace to fill your heart.
A Quiet Reflection
Take a moment today to pause.
Set aside the rush of the day, even for just a few minutes.
Open your Bible.
Sit quietly in prayer.
And remember the words of Jesus:
“One thing is needed.”
Let’s Pray
Lord, in the middle of our busy lives, help us remember what matters most.
Teach us to slow down and sit in Your presence.
Quiet our hearts so we can hear Your voice and receive the peace that only You can give.
Amen.
